Mix It Up Monday

My love for food and healing is a passion. When our daughter was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease from a life threatening viral infection, her road to recovery and healing has become a big part of our daily life. In Chinese Medicine, the kidneys are the foundation of our essence, of our ENTIRE BEING. The role of the kidneys is as vital as the pumping of our heart. They govern growth, maturation, the functioning of our
reproductive organs and sex hormones. In Western Medicine the kidneys are responsible for fluid balance, waste elimination, regulation of blood pH and mineral balance. They also play an important role in red blood cell production, blood pressure regulation and converting vitamin D to its active form. You can see how essential these bean pair shaped organs are! Healthy functioning kidneys will set you up for life.

Food plays a huge role in Winnies healing. From research that has been conducted, we know that there are particular types of food that can add stress to the kidneys. We can’t afford to add extra stress to her all ready struggling kidneys. This is where we to start to incorporate Food as Medicine.. “Food is Medicine” was coined by Hippocrates, it was his belief that eating wholesome food is the basis for good health. Hippocrates was
well ahead of his time.

The food we make in our household has a healing element to it, so we can influence our health and strengthen our body from the inside to the out. We use the philosophy of eating clean, using wholefoods and organic where possible. Our food has to be from farm to table or alternatively to know where the food is sourced from. We don’t believe in processed foods- but don’t get me wrong, there are times that I do sneak in the odd cheeky processed snack. We love our food to be full of Chi/Prana otherwise known as life force.

Mix it up Monday is here to educate us about foods that heal our body. To share delicious recipes that not only taste good but nurture and nourish our mind, body and spirit.
