Mix it up Monday: Turmeric Buckwheat Breakfast bowl

Our friends over at HEAL’R share one of their favourite healing recipes. Tumeric is the golden herb that holds many medicinal benefits. It is a natural liver detoxifier and potent anti inflammatory. In Chinese Medicine it has long been used to treat depression. This breakfast bowl will not only kick start your day and liver, it will leave you feeling amazing! My kinda breakfast.

Serves 1

Ingredients

Creamy Turmeric Buckwheat

  • ¼ cup Creamy Buckwheat whole grain hot cereal
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup filtered water
  • 1-2 cups organic coconut milk (may use any milk of your choice)
  • Pinch of Himalayan Crystal Salt
  • Rice malt syrup or coconut sugar (sweeten to taste)

Toppings 

  • Cacao nibs
  • Goji Berries
  • Fresh Pomegranate
  • Sour cherries
  • Gluten free muesli
  • Manuka Honey or Raw Organic Honey
  • Any toppings of your choice – Fresh fruit, berries, nuts, seeds, raw honey, coconut etc.

 

Method:

For the creamy turmeric buckwheat. In a small saucepan, bring the filtered water, coconut milk and a pinch of Himalayan crystal salt to a boil. Add in the buckwheat grains, turmeric, cinnamon and vanilla; stirring til combined, then reduce to medium heat, cover slightly and cook for about 10-12 minutes; stirring occasionally and adding more coconut milk if you wish. Sweeten to taste with organic rice malt syrup or coconut sugar.

Serve the creamy buckwheat in a bowl topped with any additional toppings of your choice. Here we’ve served ours with organic cacao nibs, gluten free muesli, fresh pomegranate, sour cherries, goji berries and a drizzle of manuka honey.
