Beauty From Within: ORGANIC SKIN CARE

Nov 24, 2015 | Uncategorized

I had the absolute pleasure of meeting this beautiful soul Natalie Sellers from www.kindredtoxinfreefacials.com.au in Brisbane. Natalie and I hold a passionate view towards our health and our craft. What I love about Natalie and I know you can relate, is she too has been through her own healing journey. For so many of us, this is the turning point in our lives where we want to make a change.  It resonates and aligns with your core values and beliefs- a change you are so passionate about that it becomes your career. That is pretty damn cool! I would like to introduce Natalie Sellers.

Hi, I’m Natalie Sellers. I’ve had 16 years in ‘the beauty industry’ and I had a turning point in my job. I was standing there doing a tan on a gorgeous girl, who kept pointing out all of her ‘bad bits’ . To which I had my usual programmed response, ‘Oh well, at least a tan makes you look thinner”. I joked about it at a party later that night on how ridiculous it was, that this beautiful girl needed tan so she could FEEL thinner, more beautiful, more whatever……then it dawned on me. I was the one helping to spread this message. I was the one pointing out peoples flaws and trying to ‘fix them’ externally. There’s nothing wrong with getting a tan, what is wrong is that sense that you are NOT GOOD ENOUGH without it …

Lots of things happened over the next few years, from my fiancé becoming really sick, to me then becoming very ill , and searching for ways to get better.  I started with my eating, as most people do, then I started researching into external factors. How on earth it never occurred to me that the products I was using everyday, plus my environment ( essentially toxic thoughts, on perfectionism and ‘beauty’ ) could actually be having a detrimental effect on me, physically and emotionally. It took me 3 years from there to become ‘toxin free’ as in all my products, my thoughts, my relationships, and it is still a work in progress.

I created KINDRED toxin free facials in May 2014. After 13 years in traditional beauty, there came a point where I could no longer go on. I needed to take full responsibility for the message I was sending about beauty and for what I was putting on client’s skin. I start work each day excited to educate my clients that there’s another way and that a bathroom full of products doesn’t equal beautiful skin OR happiness.

After becoming ill (I ended up with fibromyalgea chronic fatigue, PCOS and I was severely overweight by this point too) I started the process of researching about the toxins in your skincare. This took MONTHS . Did you know that some of the ingredients that the everyday person thinks are safe (especially during pregnancy) may not be? Some of them may be neuro-toxins, others can have damaging effects on your unborn child, create reproductive problems, infertility, cancer, and some are even obesogens, yup.. they make you fat! WHAT…

I had 13 years knowledge of the skin and what you need to make it healthy, to make it glow. So I started looking out for these alternatives through organic, natural plant oils, clays and herbs. I am grateful for my background, as it has set me up with a great foundation in skin and skin health, but I have actually found, that the alternatives have been far more beneficial for my ( and my clients) skin.hay would you want the synthetic version when the real version is available?

Often plant oils are extremely potent, and don’t confuse the skin like all the synthetic versions can. The proof has been in my studio… I get clients reviewing my services the and time again. Thrilled with the results. Getting the right oils for you ( even for hormonal , acne skin) , can be a game changer ( as is oil cleansing!) More on that another time.

Then there’s the fundamental reason for my work, to FEEL beautiful. Not that fake kind of beautiful that lasts for a Saturday night, but the beauty to just BE. BE YOU. Empowering people to make decisions that feel right for them are really important. I no longer ask people what they want me to ‘fix’. I ask them what they need for me that day. Some times it’s just a beautiful massage and some self care and self love that they need to feel beautiful. cared for. nurtured. It’s a different kind of beauty, it’s real, it’s every lasting and it can’t be wiped away with make up remover. THIS is what i teach my clients. That their freckles ARE beautiful, that ‘better ageing’ is a far better term to be using that ‘anti ageing’ , stop resisting, soften, love yourself. I’m big into rituals ( so much so, I call all my treatments rituals) and try to install as many ‘self loving’ rituals into the people I meet as possible. It might be the practice of using a beautiful nightly oil, or spraying a fine rose mist over them, that nurtures their soul. What ever it is, do it because you LOVE yourself, not because you don’t.

You deserve to glow, from the inside out. I understand the pain of having acne from hormonal issues, and I always work with acupuncturists, nutritionists and nauturopaths who specialise from the inside, but externally ( and emotionally) there is a lot you can do, by using organic skin care. It’s all about reducing inflammation.

So, my top 3 tips for skin care for hormonal health are:

1. CUT BACK, stop exfoliating so much, seriously. It thing your skin and makes you more sensitive. While I am a big fan on diamond head microdermbarsion (w with healing oils ) AFTER active acne to heal the scarring, use a really light, enzyme based exfoliant/mask like the deep clean ( erica brook ) or if you are a little more sensitive GLOW mask ( by the little alchemist) these reduce inflammation, draw out impurities AND give a little ‘peel’ with natural enzymes. When you are pregnant your skin can become even more sensitive, often you need to check in again and move to a very simple routine to nurture your skin.

2. USE honey ( and natural organic yogurt) Manuka and raw honey are excellent sources of antibacterial, antimicrobial and anti fungal ingredients. You can cleanse with honey and use the yogurt as a mask ( just like probiotics work on the inside, they also have great effects on breakouts from the outside) An incredible dual product I LOVE is the erica brook honey cream cleanser ( it has both manuka and raw honey, plus golden seal and frankincense) It can also be used as a weekly mask. It’s amazing.

3. Use an OIL. ( just please do NOT use coconut oil on your face if you have hormonal acne, it’s a comedogenic , meaning it will clog your pores, it’s amazing for the hair and the body though!) My favourites for a hormonal skin are hemp seed oil, borage seed oil, jojoba and Ylang Ylang  I also love argan oil as a good allrounder!) My websites best selling’ balance oil’ is a blend of these, plus more and helps to re-balance your skin, are high in antioxidants, repairs your skin ( reduces scarring) and are what I call ‘dry oils’ they are non greasy and fast penetrating. remember almost every plant has an oil, and not all oils are created equally. I always suggest using an oil blend at night and using a really light daily moisturiser during the day. Also, don’t cleanse again in the am ( use bamboo facial towels instead, they are antibacterial) unless you really need to. Keep. it. Simple.
